Óbidos Castle
Back to all places
Nestled within the scenic landscape of Portugal, the Castelo de Óbidos stands as a testament to the country’s rich and varied history. Dating back to the 8th century, this formidable castle was originally a stronghold during the early Moorish occupation of the Iberian Peninsula. However, it was not until the year 1148, under the leadership of King Afonso I of Portugal, that the castle was wrested from Moorish control, marking a significant milestone in the Christian reconquest. In the late 13th century, the castle underwent substantial renovations during the reign of King Dinis, who presented it as a wedding gift to Queen Isabel, thus enriching its legacy. Today, the castle is renowned not only for its historical significance but also for its architectural grandeur, showcasing Romanesque, Gothic, and Manueline influences. Its robust walls and imposing towers offer panoramic views of the surrounding landscape and the picturesque town of Óbidos, with its charming cobblestone streets and traditional whitewashed houses. Throughout its history, the castle has witnessed numerous sieges and battles, including during the 1383-1385 Crisis, which solidified its importance in the defence of Portuguese autonomy. In the present day, it remains a UNESCO World Heritage candidate, drawing history enthusiasts and tourists alike who are eager to explore its ancient ramparts and immerse themselves in Portugal’s storied past.
