Aqueduct of Usseira

Begun in 1573, at the behest of Queen Catherine of Austria, wife of John III, it is approximately 3 km long and fed two fountains, the Mãe de Água fountain, next to the Porta da Vila (destroyed in the 20th century) and the Praça de Santa Maria fountain. The Queen paid for its construction in full, receiving in exchange the floodplain, which became known as Várzea da Rainha.
